Mentok Kangri expedition lies in the Rupshu valley in Ladakh on the Changthang plateau. The three summits of Mentok Kangri massif are Mentok Kangri 1 – 6,250 m, Mentok Kangri 2 – 6,150 m, and Mentok Kangri 3 – 6,210 m, all connected by a ridge. ‘Mentok‘ is a Tibetan name derived from a wildflower native to this region.
The 10-day trek begins from Karzok village which is located at the western shore of a famous turquoise lake named Tso Moriri. This plateau is inhabited by the famous Changpa nomads. The climb to Mentok Kangri 2 is a mix of icy slopes, boulder fields, traversing snow-slopes and the conditions at this time of the year. Views of Chamsher & Lungser Kangri across the expanse of Tso Moriri are magical, especially on the summit day!
The best time to plan Mentok Kangri Expedition is June end to September end. It’s best to stay away from the colder months, as the winters in Ladakh are harsh beyond words.
